Chiaroscuro is an Italian artistic term that literally translates to "light-dark" (chiaro meaning clear/light and oscuro meaning obscure/dark).
In the art world, it refers to the use of strong, dramatic contrasts between light and dark to give the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. It’s less about "lighting a scene" and more about "sculpting with shadows."
